Ask A Career Consultant
Dear Yvonne, I'm currently a student in her final year at The Polytechnic, Ibadan. Would you suggest that I begin to apply for job opportunities considering I'll be done in a few months and are there job opportunities open to polytechnic graduates with good grades in the labour market?
Yvonne says,
Congratulations on making it to the final year! It’s lovely to know you’re already thinking about your future career. Should you begin to apply for jobs now? Absolutely, it’s a good idea to start applying for opportunities. It gives you a head start because the job search process does take time. It helps you start building a network, and you also start gaining interview experience. Then, there are lots of graduate programs and internships out there for new grads (including polytechnic graduates) that you can apply to.
Are there job opportunities for polytechnic graduates? Yes, there are especially if you have relevant skills and are proactive in seeking opportunities. Consider industry-specific opportunities depending on your field of study, and graduate schemes, and use your NYSC posting as an opportunity to gain field experience.
What can you do now? Polish your CV and cover letter, start working on your personal brand, search for skill-development opportunities, and consider internships. Keep learning, and stay open to opportunities even though they may not appear shiny from the onset - focus on the gained experience. Good luck with your graduation!
