Tw: sexual and gender-based violence
Hey sis,
What a week! I won’t recap all the horrific things that happened to women that culminated in a much-needed outrage last week. But against the backdrop of one of the most difficult weeks Nigerian, African, and really, women all over the world had, I just want to let you know that your feelings of anger, frustration, sorrow, hurt, and everything in between are valid.
I also want to let you know that you don’t owe anyone an argument, validation or education at this moment. So sis, delete that App. Mute those words that trigger you. Block those people who make everything trivial and stop reading those infuriating comments. We need to take care of ourselves, sis because sadly, most of the world won’t do it for us.
And sis, if you need to leave an unsafe situation, please know genuine help exists. Here is a list of organizations for rape and sexual assault survivors in Nigeria. And, here is a list of domestic violence and sexual violence service providers in Nigeria. Hope is waiting at the end of that phone call, email or conversation with trusted people. You are not alone.

Ask A Career Consultant
Dear Yvonne, I’ve been trying to apply as an Administrative Assistant with the US consular whenever I see the job opening and I have never gotten a callback. Please what can I do differently to stand a chance to work with the consular?
I have over 5 years of experience as an Administrative Assistant in a different industry, however, I know I can do the job after going through the job description. Please, I genuinely need help on what they specifically look out for while vetting applications and what I can do to stand a chance.
Yvonne says,
It’s great that you have experience and are actively applying for a position at the U.S. Consular. Rejection can be quite daunting but with persistence, you can learn quite a lot about what to do differently. Ensure to understand the specific requirements for government roles including the experience with government systems, and foreign language skills needed. Then make sure you’re tailoring your CV and cover letter to mirror the job description and emphasize your administrative skills.
Showcase your soft skills around diplomacy, cultural awareness and professionalism through your cover letter and personal brand. Stay persistent and strategic by networking with current and former employees, and tailoring your application for each position. Consider temporary or contract roles if they open up because these can help you get your foot in the door. And finally, be patient - hiring for government roles can take time, so keep applying and following up politely after a reasonable time has passed. Wishing you the best of luck in your search.
